The Internet Is Making People Closer With the widespread use of computers and the rapid development of the Internet, there has been a growing realization that the invention of the Internet has been a phenomenal achievement. It brings conveniences to all trades and professions and revolutionizes people’s life and work. But not everyone deems the Internet as a blessing. Dissidents decry the Internet as a threat to society, sure to split families, fracture friendships and turn users into computer-crazed geeks. They believe that largely due to the Internet, more and more people would rather confine themselves indoors surfing online and enjoying the virtual life than go outside and communicate with others face-to-face. For my part, far from driving people apart, the Internet with new tools like email, online phone calls, webcams and instant messaging is bringing people closer. First things first, the Internet gets us more intimate with our old friends thousands of miles away. For example, most of us have QQ zones where we can write diaries, post pictures and even publish some personal comments. When we renew our QQ zones, our friends are always there to give replies on our message boards and vice versa. Therefore, through QQ zones, we can be well-informed about how everything is going with our friends at any time. So the Internet makes it easier for friends to stay in touch and makes them feel that they live together. In the second place, the Internet has brought together strangers that would have no means of contacting each other through blogs, social media such as Facebook and email services. These tools allow them to communicate in a matter of seconds and become familiar in a much faster and efficient manner. Mailing someone a picture, a business contract or even a letter takes a fraction of the time that regular snail mail takes to deliver. Finally, thanks to the Internet, people’s social lives are not necessarily constrained within where they live and their social networks are thus expanded. When they run into trouble or difficulties or have to make important decisions, they "mobilize" their social networks through the Internet. All in all, the Internet is far and away the greatest invention ever that has transformed communication. It allows people to communicate wherever they are and whenever they want, thus shortening the distance between people.
