答案 Galileo once proclaimed that "Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe." The importance of maths, however, is less recognized in university where students choose specific majors. Despite this, I think mathematics should be taught to university students, especially those majoring in English. Although formulas and functions in maths courses might seem not remotely useful for an English major, the benefits of maths are actually substantial and worth the effort. If well trained in maths courses, students would develop analytical and critical thinking skills, two important qualities in their career and life. For example, it is now a common practice to test the logical thinking abilities of job candidates in big companies. If English majors fail the logical test, they could not even secure a chance to impress the interviewers with their fluent English. Likewise, they also need these skills to deal with problems in life and to see things from different perspectives. These skills, clearly, could be nurtured and practised by learning maths. The question, therefore, is not "should" but "how" English majors learn maths. Teachers are advised to focus on training students’ critical and analytical skills via Mathematics. An English major, armed with the language of the universe, would be unbeatable.
