Lotteries are quite popular in China and also in many other countries. In China, people can purchase tickets with pre-printed digits or select number combinations from the lottery vendors. Some people argue that lotteries are a form of gambling, which should be abolished. Do you agree or disagree to abolish national lotteries in China? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

National Lotteries Should Be Preserved Recent years witness some lucky guys who won lotteries and took home the jackpots worth of millions of RMB. Of course, these winners belong to a tiny portion of a greater population of lottery-purchasers. For those who did not hit the jackpot, there is no reason to be upset, because they are, indirectly, contributing to charities, sporting industries and government revenues. In this regard, I do not think we should abolish national lotteries in China. First and foremost, national lotteries provide a chance for average people to wish for a fortune and contribute their bits to charities. People who buy lotteries realize that the chance to get a windfall is slim. However remote the chance is, they can hope for a better and different life. As Milan Kundera, the author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, eloquently pronounced, "Life is elsewhere". Lotteries are the elsewhere-life for those people who dare to dream and hope. Besides, should their dream not come true, they won’t be devastated, because their investment of lottery doesn’t go to the dike but to the charity foundations which help out poor children in less developed areas. The hope of the lottery-buyers may vanish, but the investment would become a sparkle igniting the hope of the kids in desperate needs. There is nothing more satisfying than an investment like lotteries, which are able to transform our life or the life of others. Whilst some people are worried that lotteries might lead people into the abyss of addiction, it is not as monstrous as other forms of gambling. The frequency of national lotteries is usually once a week or even twice a month. What’s more, it is impossible for people to take the risk to win for a streak within a short span of time, which is the root cause for being addicted to casino gambling. Because of the slim chance of winning the top prize, lottery-buyers are usually more rational than those casino frequenters. Up till now, there are very few, if any, reports about people taking out all their savings or even borrowing against their houses to purchase lotteries. The concerns of addiction are hence exaggerated. In conclusion, national lotteries are both a hope given to those who want to live otherwise and a significant contribution to the endeavors in charities, sports and other social undertakings. Therefore, it should not be abolished simply because of the underserved concerns of addiction.
