Professor Smith recently persuaded 35 people, 23 of them women, to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions for a fortnight. When he came to analyze their embarrassing lapses in a scientific report, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groupings. Nor did the lapses appear to be entirely random.
One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. "The explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer," explains the professor. "People program themselves to do certain activities regularly. It was the woman’ s custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. But somehow the action got reversed in the program." About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these "program assembly failures."
Altogether the volunteers logged 433 unintentional actions that they found themselves doing— an average of twelve each. There appear to be peak periods in the day when we are at our zaniest (滑稽的 ). These are two hours some time between eight a.m. and noon, between four and six p.m. with a smaller peak between eight and ten p.m. "Among men the peak seems to be when a changeover in brain ’program’ occurs, as for instance between going to and from work." Women on average reported slightly more lapses—12.5 compared with 10.9 for men.
According to the passage, which of the following statement is true?
选项
A、Each participant did 12 unintentional actions.
B、A woman has the habit of throwing earrings to her dog.
C、Women tend to be more absent-minded compared with men.
D、Computer-like brain regulates the routines and does not make mistakes.
答案
C
解析
细节题。根据第三段中的“an average of twelve each”可知,整体的平均数是12,但并不意味着每个人都正好有12次过失,故A项错误。根据第二段中的“One of the women…one morning threw her dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear….It was the woman’s custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings.”可知,这个女人的习惯是每天早上把狗食扔给狗,然后戴上耳环,“把耳环当作狗食扔给狗”只是她某一天早上无意中做错的事,并不是习惯性的行为,故B项错误。根据第二段中的“the brain is like a computer…People program themselves to do certain activities regularly…But somehow the action got reversed in the program…‘program assembly failures’”可知,人的大脑程序有时也会出错,故D项错误。根据第三段最后一句“Women on average reported slightly more lapses—12.5 compared with 10.9 for men.”可知,C项正确。
