问题     Modern furniture design has come in for a good deal of abuse. The very word "modern" has unpleasant connotations. It brings to mind all that is impracticable, garish and vulgar; brightly-colored, angular tables: fragile sets that balance precariously on two legs; chairs with inexplicable holes carved in them to trap the unwary: and spindly lamps of twisted wire which crouch in corners like enormous spiders. But we must not confuse all that is good in modern design with these cheap, sensational imitations.
How, then, are we to distinguish the genuine from the sham? Mass produced articles which do nothing but exploit novelty, have brought much design into disrepute. The "futuristic" coffee-bar sets the pace with its bright, chromium surfaces, its gaudy, ridiculous tables and chairs and its tropical plants which wind in and out of crazy beams in the ceiling. This sort of thing is the design’s nightmare. It debases our standards of taste so that we cannot discriminate between the good and the bad. In the end, to say that a single thing is "modern" is the same as saying that it is ugly and offensive.
True modern design is both simple and efficient. It aims at relating methods of construction to real needs. In Victorian times, design got out of touch with life. Needless ornamentation made us forget what furniture was really for. Modern design has stripped away all that is inessential. Its purpose is not to astonish, but to provide us with what is pleasing and useful.
A piece of really fine modern furniture should never be seen in isolation, but as part of a setting. Only then can we judge its shape, color, and utility. Modern houses tend to be small and the furniture must give us room to move. It should be well proportional and at the same time unobtrusive. Its presence should be felt rather than seen. Because we can do away with unnecessary walls and doors, quite a small house can give the impression being large, light, and airy. An elegant piece of furniture can often be used to divide a large room into two, so as to make the best possible use of space and provide a maximum of comfort. A well designed modern house is one we can really live in and not move about like unwanted guests.
