答案 Saving Languages and Dialects There are numerous benefits to popularize a common language in a society, especially in countries with different ethnic groups. A common language makes it easy for people from different nationalities to communicate with each other. For instance, the spread of Putonghua has contributed much to the construction and modernization of China. However, the popularization of a common language has greatly reduced the number of people speaking different languages or dialects. Many of them are even in danger of dying out since few people are still using them. It is high time for the government to do something to help save these languages and dialects. Then, why should we try to save these languages and dialects? For one thing, the extinguishing of a language or dialect always means the forever loss of a history and culture of a certain group of people. We all know that there were once many great civilizations in ancient times, and they have left some magnificent cultural relics to human beings today. However, since their languages have already died out in history, their customs, culture, and history are hidden in oblivion. For another, a language or dialect, as the chief carrier of the culture, always provide a special and unique perspective to view the world. If a language dies, a way of viewing and explaining what happens in the world is also lost. What can we do to help save those endangered languages and dialects? Firstly, the government must invest in preserving them using multimedia technologies. The US government did just this in the middle of the 20th century. Many linguists then were assigned to ethnic groups to record the languages and dialects because at that time it was realized that many minority ethnic groups, especially some Indian tribes, were being assimilated by the mainstream white culture. If the language is doomed to extinguish, at least it can be saved as audio and video data that can be studied by our later generations! Secondly, as what the Israeli government has done, people from the same ethnic group should be encouraged to use their special dialect or language. That is to say, if a common language is needed, these ethnic groups should adopt the bilingual policy. It is foreseeable that globalization will speed up the extinguishing of many languages and dialects. Attention must be paid to this serious issue, and great efforts should be taken immediately to help save them.
