问题     Human beings are animals. We breathe, eat and digest, and reproduce the same life 【C1】_____ common to all animals. In a biological laboratory, rats, monkeys, and humans seem very much the same.
However, biological understanding is not enough: 【C2】_____itself, it can never tell us what human beings are. 【C3】_____to our physical equipment — the naked human body — we are not an 【C4】_____ animal. We are tropical creatures, 【C5】_____hairless and sensitive to cold. We are not fast and have neither claws nor sharp teeth to defend ourselves. We need a lot of food but have almost no physical equipment to help us get it. In the purely physical 【C6】_____, our species seems a poor 【C7】_____for survival.
But we have survived — survived and multiplied and 【C8】_____the earth. Some day we will have a 【C9】_____living on the moon, a place with neither air nor water and with temperatures that turn gases into solids. How can we have done all these things? Part of the answer is physical. 【C10】_____its limitations, our physical equipment has some important 【C11】_____. We have excellent vision and hands that can【C12】_____objects with a precision unmatched by any other 【C13】_____. Most importantly, we have a large brain with an almost 【C14】_____number of neural 【C15】_____.
We have used this physical equipment to create culture, the key to our survival and success. If we live in the Arctic, we supply the warmth our tropical bodies need 【C16】_____clothing, shelter, and【C17】____ heat. If a million people want to live in a desert that supplies natural food for only a few hundred, we find water to grow food and 【C18】_____deficits by transporting supplies from distant places. Inhabitants of our eventual moon colony will bring their own food and oxygen and then create an artificial earth environment to supply necessities. With culture, we can overcome our natural limitations.
It was not always 【C19】_____. Our distant ancestors were just animals, faced with the limits of their physical equipment. They had no 【C20】_____and lacked the physical capacity to use it.
【C9】

选项 A、residence
B、colony
C、home
D、empire

答案B

解析 词汇类试题;上下文类试题。从下文中可找到提示{“inhabitants of our eventual moon colony willbring their own food…”。同时,residence表示“the act or a period of residing in a place.居住时间:居住在某个地方的行为或时期”;colony表示“a group of emigrants or their descendants who settle in a distant territory bdtremain subject to or closely associated with the parent country.侨民:定居在异乡的一组侨民或他们的后代。仍从属于其祖国或同其祖国有密切关系”。两个相对比也可以看出选择后者比较贴切。
