W: Welcome to our program Technology & Innovations. First, please allow me to ask you a question; when you apply sunscreen to your face, have you ever found yourself wondering if the lotion is safe?
If your answer is "yes", what will you do? Will you search the Internet for help? Are there any websites providing readily available answers to tell the safety of one product or another? Today, we have invited Dara O’Rourke, a professor of environmental and labor policy at the University of California, Berkeley, to share his solution to this delicate issue.
M: Thank you Maria. The case you mentioned just now often took place in my daily life as well. And that was why I began to build GoodGuide.
W: Could you tell us more about it?
M: Well, (1) GoodGuide was founded in 2007. It is a website and smartphone app that rates 140,000 consumer products in the US, according to their safety, environmental sustainability and the ethics of the firms that make them.
W: Sounds quite helpful especially in times of electronic commerce. But considering the amount of the products you have to rate, I suppose it must be a hard work.
M: Yes, but (2) my own worries about the safety of a product triggered off my devotion to this app. Together with a team of chemists, lots of testing and a chunk of venture capital later, I spent more than two years on building this website to offer consumers practical advice on what to buy and not to buy.
W: That is really impressive. I bet it has gained lots of users so far.
M: Yes. It is quite popular all over our country.
W: Who are the greatest users of GoodGuide?
M: So far, GoodGuide has mostly been used by shoppers who are already keen to know about any issues connected with products they buy.
W: Could you give us some specific examples?
M: Sure. (3) For example, there are mothers who are concerned about their children’s health, older people who face chronic illnesses or supporters of a cause, such as animal rights.
W: I see.
M: The hope behind the app is that the idea of finding out about a product’s background will become the mainstream.
W: Have you made any upgrades or service expansion since GoodGuide was founded?
M: Of course. (4) Now GoodGuide has launched an online service called The Purchase Analyzer. It is designed to inform consumers not just about the values embedded in products, but also about whether they are the virtuous shoppers they say they want to be.
W: Could you show us how to use the service?
M: Yes, to use the new service, users need to create a GoodGuide account, set up a filter to make purchase decisions based on issues they care about, which can range from whether the user favors organic products to buying only from firms with a good human-rights record, and then sync their accounts from different shopping sites so that GoodGuide can rate their purchases. (5) When the customer scans the bar code on a product with the camera in their smartphone, the app identifies it and checks in a database to score how it shapes up.
This is the end of Part One of the interview. Questions 1 to 5 are based on what you have just heard.
1. What is this interview mainly about?
2. According to the interview, what caused the man to build GoodGuide?
3. According to the interview, who of the following are among the greatest users of GoodGuide?
4. Why did GoodGuide launch The Purchase Analyzer?
5. How do customers get information about products via GoodGuide?

选项 A、Businessmen who travel a lot.
B、Patients who need medical advice.
C、Supporters of animal rights.
D、Government officials.

答案C

解析 句(3)中,男士列举了一些GoodGuide的主要客户:关心孩子健康的妈妈们,患有慢性病的老人们,或者支持诸如动物权利等事业的人们,因此答案为[C]。
