YES
The vegetarian diet is a balanced diet filled with nutritious vegetables which are alkaline-forming and health-building. Having researched the eating habits of 110,000 adults for over 20 years, Harvard found that a 3-ounce serving of red meat daily was associated with a 13 percent greater chance of dying. Close to 5,000 Americans die of foodborne diseases every year. Food poisoning is mostly caused by animal products. Factory farms, slaughter houses, and meat packing plants are extremely unsanitary places. Meat production is causing pollution to our natural resources, and producing greenhouse gases in the air.
NO
It is well-recognized that meat provides a wide range of nutrients that are difficult to obtain from vegetables and fruits. People cannot keep fit without meat. Meat is high in protein and other essential nutrients, and these nutrients are hardly to find alternatives in plant foods.
To some groups of people, a monotonous dietary structure will even injure their fitness. For instance, children’s growth may be affected by unbalanced diet. Also, if a pregnant woman refuses to take any meat, her baby will suffer from malnutrition to a high degree.
To be a vegetarian is not an appropriate choice for those who are allergic to plants like caraway and celery.

答案
Should We Become Vegetarians? People have heatedly discussed the issue about whether we should become vegetarians as vegetarian diets are gaining popularity nowadays. Some believe there is no need to eat meat because of concerns over health, food safety and environmental protection. Many meat eaters, in contrast, think that insufficient intake of nutrients from meat will cause serious health problems, and a vegetarian diet is not suitable for everyone. As to me, I do not agree with either extreme, I support the view that people had better cut down on their meat consumption, which is not just a personal choice but an ethical decision. Animals raised for meat live in truly abysmal conditions and are always treated badly prior to and during the slaughter. Moreover, some animals are given drugs so that they could grow bigger and produce more meat, which is unhealthy both to animals and humans. Therefore, people should reduce their meat intake and do something to protect animals. In short, although a diet with a good combination of meat and vegetables has considerable value, it would be better to appeal to more people to eat vegetables since current meat-eating is at an unsustainable level and there are many other alternatives to meat in the world to keep people healthy.
