    Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1902, but he grew up in Little Falls, Minnesota.     In 1924, Lindbergh became more serious about flying. He joined the United States military and graduated first in his pilot class.______【48】During the same time, a wealthy hotel owner named Raymond Orteig was offering a generous award to the first pilot who could fly nonstop from New York City to Paris, France.     Lindbergh knew he had the skills to complete the flight, but did not have any plane was capable of flying that far for that long.______【49】On May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field in New York City and arrived the next day at an airstrip(简易机场) outside Paris.
