In some provinces, the English test score has been reduced from 150 to 100, and by 2020, the English test will be removed from China’s college entrance exam, according to the Ministry of Education. 答案 It is reported that in some provinces of China, the English test score has been reduced from 150 to 100 in the national college entrance examination, known as "Gaokao". And the Ministry of Education has also worked out a plan for phasing out the English test from the "Gaokao" system. Instead, the English test will be held twice a year to allow students in senior high school to choose the best score for their college admission. Such changes made in the English test have aroused a heated discussion among educators, students and parents. Opinions are divided on this test reform. Some people view reducing English weight in overall admissions test scores as a strong measure to cool down nationwide English mania and reverse the prevailing practice in school that gives emphasis to English over Chinese, while others doubt whether the reform would reduce students’ burden of learning English or whether the substitute test could reflect students English skills and help students learn English better. As far as I’m concerned, the test reform is a positive move toward a better "Gaokao" system. The main reason for my point is that the reform changes China’s once-in-a-lifetime exam system by giving students more test-taking chances. As is known to us all, "Gaokao" is the principal method by which most students enter almost all higher education institutions in China, and their performance in the exam will influence them a lot. However, there were always people who were good at English but unluckily performed poorly in the English exam. Owing to this reform, such people can take the English exam for several times and avoid the worst result for their college admission. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that this test reform makes the "Gaokao" system more fair and reasonable. What’s more, the change in scores will help relieve students from heavy academic burdens. For many students who are not interested in English, it’s unnecessary for them to spend so much time studying it, and for those who have a passion for English, they can study it in college. Of course, reducing the weight of English in the entrance exam doesn’t mean English is no longer important for Chinese students. Instead, the reform makes us reconsider the proper way for English teaching and learning. The low-end and exam-oriented English teaching and learning has come under heavy criticism for making most English learners dabblers. Indeed, English learners are not taught to gain high scores in tests, but to master the language in a real sense. Therefore, English teaching and learning must be reoriented to lay due emphasis on using English in real life.
