The Brooklyn poet Tracy K. Smith wins Pulitzer on her birthday. That Monday was a really big day for her—she turned 40 and won a Pulitzer Prize.(33)She was honored for the collection "Life on Mars" , which she wrote in her Boerum Hill home.
    "It’s been so exciting," said Smith, who teaches creative writing at Princeton University. "I feel like it’s a gift for any writer to be recognized like this. "(34)Smith said "Life on Mars", published by small Minnesota press Graywolf, was inspired in part by her father, who was an engineer on the Hubble space telescope and died in 2008. "This is a book that in many ways is to mourn for my father. It’s nice to know that he is also getting some recognition," she said. " I remember him telling me a-bout these images, what they were going to be like and being excited by them. "
    The book is also a nod to David Bowie, whose song inspired the title. In the award citation, the Pulitzer Prize Board called Smith’s work " a collection of bold, skillful poems, taking readers into the universe and moving them to an authentic mix of joy and pain. "
    Smith was pregnant with her daughter, who is now two years old, when she was working on the prize-winner. Since then, her study has become the baby’s room, so she heads to area cafe Building on Bond to write. "Brooklyn is kind of my writer’s retreat," she said.
