A Teaching Tool or a Distraction?
After 20 years of teaching, Miriam Morgenstern is calling it quits this month. The Lowell High School history and ESL teacher’s reason to leave the classroom is her frustration with students and their cell phones. The texting, tweeting, and Snapchatting during class time are "an incredible distraction, and makes it much more difficult to teach," she said. "It’s pretty hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video."
It is the most vexing issue of the digital age for teachers and administrators: What to do about students’ cell phones? Some maintain that smartphones and other devices in schools are crucial to being competitive in a global market, while others insist that phones and tablets distract students, compromising their learning and focus.
"You’ll get kids saying, ’I’ll look something up for English, and while I’m here let me quickly check my Instagram or Twitter feed.’ And then it’s, ’Oh, I never realized this girl said that to me,’ and now they’re distracted and not really engaged with their lesson plan," said Joni Siani, a Braintree psychologist and author of "Celling Your Soul: No App for Life," about how digital media affect young people.
Educators don’t agree on much when it comes to digital devices in classrooms, especially since the debate over cell phones is part of a broader conversation about a cultural shift underway in classrooms—a move away from the traditional model of teachers imparting information to students, to one where students actively participate in their own learning, using mobile devices to access the Web, educational apps, and other tools.

答案 Mobile Phone Should Be Used in Class Whether to use mobile phones in class is a controversial issue. Some teachers and administrators claim that cell phones are distractions. However, others maintain that cell phones can make students remain competitive and more engaged in their study. As far as I am concerned, negative as it may sound, the presence of mobile phone, if used properly, is actually beneficial to college students. First of all, with advanced apps and software, mobile phones could be the very platform for immersible learning. Useful information is actually one touch away and it can be "pushed" to cell phones and stored for intensive study. Better still, it could be shared among students and teachers instantaneously, without wasting time to copy the materials and hand them out in the next class. Second, mobile phone, with Internet access, could be a walking encyclopedia, always ready to impart knowledge. This is especially helpful for discovery learning in class. Teachers may assign some query tasks for students, who can make the best use of their mobile phones to locate the answer, collaboratively or individually. The hands-on learning experience is not only beneficial but also fun, which is a way better than the teacher preaching in the lectern. In conclusion, mobile phones should be allowed in class, as they could serve as a useful tool for discovery and immersible learning.
