问题    When I see clients, this is the question that I’m asked the most. If you’re in a public place, look around. 【F1】Nearly everyone you see will have wondered if they’re going "crazy", and at least one in four of them will suffer mental health issues at some point in their lives.
【F2】If you imagine your mental health as a car, you know that when you’re cruising along and heading in the direction you want to go, life feels good. But, if you lose control of the car and you deviate wildly off course, you (and others) can get badly hurt. So, how can you tell when it’s time to get some help to get back on the road?
Perhaps you’ve had a thought like "My boss is out to get me" flash through your mind? Usually, we can do a Taylor Swift with such a thought and shake it off, but sometimes we have the same thought stuck on repeat.
When you begin to look for evidence everywhere of a cheating partner or a tyrannical boss, everything is filtered through that lens. If your partner is home late from work: they’re cheating. If your boss asks you to redraft a report: out to get you. 【F3】Once again, this stuck thinking will have a major effect on the quality of your life and it’s time to talk it out with someone who knows how to help.
【F4】Another sign that you really need to talk to someone independent and qualified is when your thoughts and feelings are overwhelming, terrifying or causing you to lash out in anger. The sick feeling in your stomach or the blinding headaches, the irregular heartbeats or the shortness of breath can all be physical signs of thoughts that are running off the road.
Mental wellbeing means having the flexibility to change your mind when new evidence comes to light It means getting the things you value down. It means treating the people you love with the respect they deserve. It means making progress towards your goals. It means being able to talk yourself down, cheer yourself up and reach out to others when you need help.
【F5】If we go back to our car analogy, talking to a mental health professional is like having your car serviced regularly. It can prevent emergencies and help keep you and everyone safe.
