The Honolulu beach used to be a lot less crowded 30 years ago. In those days, you could walk along here and not【B1】______into people every couple of feet. I remember, I used to sit by the sea all a lone and watch the sun go down. It was very’ quiet, very peaceful—no【B2】______radios playing rock music, no traffic noise. All you could hear were the waves coming into shore. It used to be a lot cleaner too. You didn’t see any cans or bottles or junk like that—just some pieces of wood from the ocean.
The town was different, too. Of course, it was a lot smaller then. There were some shops, and a few banks, and a movie【B3】______, and that’s about all. You don’t have all these【B4】______hotels and stores in the city then. And no【B5】______buildings, either. Most people lived in small wooden houses, painted all white and pretty.
All that changed after the war. Soldiers who were based here came back and【B6】______down. They started to【B7】______their families and the (43) grew. And then the tourists started coming—more and more every year. That’s when they began to build all those hotels here—each one bigger than the next.【B9】______
Of course, tourist money ’meant more jobs, but it also meant more roads, more ears ,more pollution, and higher prices.【B10】______? Did you know that we have the highest food prices in the U. S. ? And we’ve also got the highest housing costs. Have you looked in the newspaper?【B11】______. You have to be a millionaire. And they call this progress. Well, you can have it. I’ll take the good old days.
