Former US President Franklin Roosevelt once said that "Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort." What is happiness to you? Write an essay of about 400 words entitled:
HAPPINESS

答案
HAPPINESS What is happiness? Different people have different ideas. Some people are rich; they think they are happy. Other people have many friends, and they feel happy. For children, happiness often suggests getting goodies or playing with toys. For a stamp collector, stamps bring more delight than meals. And for a scientist, a discovery or an invention rather than anything else gives him the greatest satisfaction. So we know that happiness has much to do with wealth, friendship, material satisfaction, career achievements, and so on. However, all these things alone do not necessarily bring about happiness. The way you treat them decides whether you will be happy or not. That is, it is one’s inner state of mind that decides happiness. First, external materials do not necessarily make one happy. Material shortage or poverty may cause troubles to us, but those with great hope and an optimistic mind can easily overcome them. Actually, many poor people live happily. On the other hand, there is no lack of news about millionaires committing suicide. Therefore, we cannot depend on material success to be happy. Then, we may feel good when we are loved, cared, admired or respected by others. However, if we look into these spiritual matters deeper, we understand that it is not others’ love, care, admiration or respect that makes us happy; it is our own feelings that make us happy. No one can please all others; there are always some people who are kind to you and some who are hostile to you. Therefore, whether you feel happy or not depends on how much you can please those you really care. That explains why Leslie Chan was unhappy and committed suicide even though he had so many fans who loved him so much. If external material and spiritual matters do not bring about happiness, then we have to conclude that happiness come from our own mind. For example, imagine you will earn one million yuan this year. Will you be happy then? Maybe. If last year you only earned 500 thousand yuan, or if all your neighbors, colleagues and friends only earn 900 thousand yuan, there is good reason for you to feel happy. But suppose you earned 5 million yuan last year, or suppose all those you know earn 2 million yuan each, it is doubtful you will still be so happy. Yes, happiness is related to how you define yourself against a certain background. In a word, happiness, though closely related to external material and spiritual matters such as wealth, health, and other’s care and love, in essence depends on how one treats himself, others and the world.
