W: Could you tell me a bit about why[12]you wanted to be a doctor and how you first got into the medical profession?
M: Well,[13]I happened to be doing language for my A level at school, and I didn’t think there was a great deal of future in the study of language, so I’d change over to some scientific subjects that I felt might be useful. And after a great deal of difficulty, I got accepted at a medical school and eventually succeeded.
W: So you mean eventually you went into a medical school without any A levels in scientific subjects?
M: That’s right. The first morning the lecturer wrote up some chemical formula on the board, which was the first chemistry lecture I had ever been to. So I think she might have been putting it up in Egyptian hieroglyphics. I didn’t understand at all.
W: So you had a lot of personal individual work to do to catch up with everyone else.
M: Yes, it was very hard, but the university I was at, which was Sheffield, had a kind of special class for what you might call "lame ducks" such as myself.
W: And you eventually qualified?
M: Yes,[15]when I qualified in Sheffield, I was so interested in the general aspects of medicine that I joined a special practice at the University of Manchester, and from then on I went on to student health service work back in my former University of Sheffield and then came down here to Reading twelve years ago.
12. What is probably the man’s occupation at present?
13. Why did the man decide to switch to scientific subjects?
14. How did the man feel about the first chemistry lecture in the medical school?
15. What did the man do immediately after he qualified in Sheffield?
选项
A、He wanted to make a better preparation for his future.
B、He was keen on scientific subjects.
C、His parents wanted him to learn scientific subjects.
D、He was not good at the language.
答案
A
解析
细节题。男士提到,他认为学习语言前景渺茫(I didn’t think there was agreat deal of future in the study of language),所以他就改学一些他觉得有用的理科课程,也就是说男士是为了将来有所发展才改学了理科课程,故答案为A)。
