M: Michelle Hackman, a high school senior, won second place in a national science competition. She conducted a study to see what happens when a teenager is deprived of his or her phone. She joins us on the phone. Thanks very much for being with us.
W: Thank you so much.
M: And what did you do—just took cell phones out of teenagers’ hands and started studying them?
W: Yeah, I based my research on a market research study that made the claim that the reason we can’t separate from our phones is that we become anxious. And so I wanted to see whether I would see that sort of behavior if I were to do that experimentally, just took the cell phones away from kids.
M: And?
W: And I actually found when I took them away, the kids became under-stimulated, and almost didn’t know how to entertain themselves.
M: Oh. How did you observe?
W: I used a biological feedback device. I observed levels of stimulation. And I literally saw that subjects who had phones taken away from them experienced decreases in their stimulation.
M: Now, I have been told you’re blind.
W: Yes.
M: How did you conduct the study?
W: I couldn’t actually conduct the study myself because of the readings on the biological feedback meter, I couldn’t take them myself. So I actually gathered a team of students to administer the study for me.
M: So what are you going to do? What are your plans?
W: I’m going to go to Yale in the fall to study psychology, and I will bring the cell phone research with me.
