What if you never needed to eat again? Imagine that all you needed was a special formula that would provide your body with all the nutrients it needed to survive. Well, computer programmer Rob Rhinehart has created just such a thing called Soylent—and it’s now shipping to adventurous eaters.
Rhinehart invented Soylent after becoming frustrated with the high price of foods and the time he spent making meals. He has shown the Soylent development process on his blog. "I guess that the body doesn’t need food itself, only the chemicals it has. What if I ate only the ingredients the body uses for energy?" he wrote in a blog post titled "How I Stopped Eating Food."
Forty different chemicals make up his formula, which is made up of packaged powder and a bottle of oil. Soylent drinkers mix these two parts with water. After experimenting with the formula, Rhinehart and his roommates made a plan to sell it. They raised $3,500,000 to start a company and put Soylent into production. Now the company sells bags of the formula on its website.
At its lowest price, Soylent costs about $3 a meal. This is much cheaper than some solid foods. Soylent also does not spoil as quickly as many fresh foods. For these reasons, Rhinehart thinks Soylent could someday become a solution to world hunger.
The young inventor has been living off of Soylent for more than a year. But he does still eat some solid foods, such as when he goes to restaurants with friends.
However, before you follow Rhinehart’s lead and forsake solid foods completely, you should talk to your doctor. Many medical professionals don’t think people should replace all of their meals with a powdered formula. They argue that human beings need a well-balanced diet to be healthy. Solid foods may have important nutritional benefits that cannot be got from formulas like Soylent.
