答案 The Future of the Chinese Language Thanks to the British colonization and the rise of the US, the English language has been the dominating language when it comes to international communication. However, with the rapid economic development, China has gradually become one of the largest economies in the world. Meanwhile, Chinese language is also gaining attention from all over the world. Will Chinese become an international language in the future? Well, Chinese language has the potential, but there is still a long way to go. Mandarin Chinese already has more native speakers than any other language in the world. Nearly 1.2 billion people speak some form of Chinese as their first language, so technically speaking, Chinese is already an "international language". Besides, China’s economy today is undergoing rapid changes: the middle class is expanding, purchasing power is increasing, and with loosening regulation, China is becoming a fertile new market for global companies. In addition, native Chinese tech companies such as Alibaba and Sina are having some of the most successful IPOs in U. S.. China is becoming one of the biggest trade partners in the world. Along with the rapid development of Chinese economy, there will be an increasing demand for learning and using Chinese. However, even though Chinese language has great potential to become a universal language, when it is compared with English, there are still some insuperable obstacles. Firstly, from how we code to how we type, most of the world’s biggest advancements were developed with the English-speaking market. The Internet and computer technology has been promoted by English, especially software programming. Secondly, English is a top priority for the world’s fastest-growing markets because it’s the common language that all kinds of international companies use to communicate with each other. The necessity of speaking English in the workplace has therefore increased the number of individuals looking forward to improving their English skills for potential employment. Thirdly, the diversity of English-speakers has heightened the demand for English training tools that can be accessed easily and inexpensively. As a result, there is a surge in demand for standardized English proficiency exams such as the TOEFL, IELTS. These factors still consolidate English language’s global predominance. But it doesn’t mean Chinese can’t be international. China is developing rapidly these years. China’s influence in the world, especially in Asia, is increasing, and China is helping many African countries in building their infrastructure. Following this trend, maybe one day they will be willing to learn Chinese in order to do business more smoothly with us. When that comes true, Chinese will become a truly international language.
